Tell Essays - Fiction With Unreliable Narrators, The Tell-Tale Heart
Tell Tale Heart By Poe The short story can produce many different "types" of characters. Usually, these characters are faced with situations that give us an insight into their true "character". In the Tell Tale Heart, a short story written by Edgar Allen Poe, the narrator of the story is faced with a fear. He is afraid of the Old Man's Eye. The actions that this narrator performs in order to quell his fear can lead others to believe that he suffers from some sort of mental illness. The very fact that this narrator is so repulsed by the old man's eye, which he refers to as "the evil eye", is reason enough to be suspicious of his character. The narrator has an inner struggle with the thought that "the evil eye" is watching him and an underlying feeling that "the evil eye" will see the real person that he has become. This paranoia leads the narrator to believe that the only way he can put down his fears is to kill the old man. It is said that denial is usually the sign of a problem. If this holds true, then the narrator has the characteristics of a "madman". In the first paragraph, he asks, "but why will you say that I am mad!" (Kennedy & Gioia, 34) This statement can be looked upon as a statement made by someone going through a paranoid episode. He talks as if he is in frenzy, especially when he talks about hearing things in heaven and in hell. "The disease had sharpened my senses?Above all was the sense of hearing acute. I heard all things in the heaven?I heard many things in hell." (Kennedy & Gioia, 34) The "disease" that the narrator is talking about eats away at his conscience until "[I] made up my mind to take the life of the old man, and thus rid myself of the eye forever." (Kennedy & Gioia, 34) The progression of the story revolves around the actions of the narrator. He describes the "wise" ways in which he prepares himself to commit this deed. The way the narrator "stalks" the old man the whole week before he kills him can be evidence of a problem. Every night he would watch the old man sleep. He found comfort in knowing that the eye was not watching him, that it could not see the true evil within his soul. While the eye was closed, so was the idea of killing the old man. It is not until the old man awakens each day that the struggle within is apparent. This may be the reason why the narrator is so obsessed with watching the old man sleep. The actual act of murder, which the narrator believes was premeditated, was in fact a spur of the moment action. He toiled with the idea while the man was awake, that is, while he could see the "evil eye". However, while the eye was closed, the narrator was at peace. One night, during one of the narrator's "stalking" sessions, the old man awakens. The narrator goes into a paranoid frenzy, mistaking the beating of his heart for the beating of the old man's heart. During this frenzy, the narrator is afraid that neighbors will hear the beating of the man's heart. This causes the narrator to take action. He quickly subdues the old man and kills him. He then takes extreme steps in disposing of the body, dismembering it and burying it under the planks in the floorboard. These extreme actions can be used as evidence to the paranoia that is taking shape. The fear of getting caught would be a normal reaction to someone who has committed a murder. However, the dismemberment of the body was not necessary since the narrator had ample resources to dispose of the body properly. When the police arrive at the house, the narrator is sure that he has nothing to fear. He lets them into the house and bids them to search wherever they like. He leads them into the room where the body is buried and invites them to sit down. Although he fears nothing consciously, the narrator battles with his conscience subconsciously. He begins to feel uneasy when the officers start talking to him. The paranoia begins to build steadily and before long, the narrator hears the beating of his heart, which he again mistakes for the beating of the corpse's heart. This implication gives further evidence to the paranoid nature of the narrator. The beating grows louder

Arms and the Boy Essays
Arms and the Boy Essays Arms and the Boy Paper Arms and the Boy Paper Owen uses Imagery, language and verse form to present the death and suffering of the soldiers. He uses these techniques in other poems, too, to create an effective, conspicuous theme. In, Dulcet et Decorum est., Owen, straight away, uses Imagery to convey his feelings about the soldiers. He describes the soldiers as if theyre like old beggars under sacks and coughing like hags. The implication of the exhaustion creates the image hat the soldiers look like ill tramps; they no longer look like robust, young men because the endurance of suffering has changed them health wise and In appearance. This Is different from the poem, Arms and the Boy, because the soldiers do not change in their health or looks, but in their innocence. Owen informs his audience that there lurk no claws behind his fingers supple, which suggests that the soldier Is not harmful and would never kill anyone If the choice was his. Unfortunately, the choice Is not his and he has to kill and fight; some of his innocence is lost forever. A significant amount of tribulations and sufferings are listed in, Dulcet et Decorum est., which creates a slow, heavy rhythm. Owen Informs his audience that the soldiers all went lame; all blind; drunk with fatigue; deaf even to the hoots. This tired rhythm mirrors the soldiers and what they are feeling. Owen does this so that we can comprehend more effectively what the soldiers are going through Just by saying the poem out loud. The suffering Is also emphasizes because of how the sentence structure is formed. By listing the soldiers injuries and poor wellbeing, the effect is almost overwhelming because the audience has little time to take in all of the pain that the soldiers have to endure. This is different to the description of suffering in, Arms and the Boy, because Owen creates a calm tone, rather than a violent one. He does this by using the same verse form throughout the poem and uses a casual tone to convey his thoughts on war. In Dulcet et Decorum est., we know that Owens fellow soldiers have to live through this languishing life, but It is easy to forget that Owen himself suffers In a way that the others might not. Wilfred Owen had suffered from shell-shock in the war and a symptom of this is that he cannot escape from some helpless dreams; he talks about one dream he had where the dying man plunges at him guttering, choking, drowning. The diction creates a violent Image of a demented man who looks as If he is possessed just because of the frantic pain. Rather than thinking of himself as lucky that he was not the agonized man, Owen detests the fact that he was there, watching It, Ana NAS to level Walt It Slammer ascription Is uses In, Anthem Tort mea Youth, UT instead of the soldiers suffering, personification is used when the weapons are described as demented and wailing as if they are the ones being tortured and not the soldiers. The representation of death in, Dulcet et Decorum est., fits in well with the futility of war theme that Owen is trying to convey. Insignificance is implied through language when the soldiers flung the wretched man behind the wagon. The effect of this nugatory attitude illustrates to the audience that the death and suffering of the soldiers is forlorn and futile. A different attitude is implied in, Anthem for Doomed Youth. This is because it has much more of a holy theme throughout the poem, relating to a conventional and respectful funeral in contrast to the reality of dying a painful death. The representation of death in, Anthem for Doomed Youth constitutes a theme of disrespect and a mockery of religion. Towards the end of, Dulcet et Decorum est., Owen talks about eyes, referring to them as writhing in his face. This creates a sense of incapability to withstand this tormented pain and implies how much the soldier is actually suffering. An image is also created by Owens choice of words. This is completely different to the eyes mentioned in, Anthem for Doomed Youth, for they are illustrated as if there are soldiers spirits still living on by holy glimmers. There is a great contrast between the eyes mentions; one set are demented and are in fierce agony while others carry on friends spirits. To conclude, Owens use of various techniques effectively presents death and the suffering of soldiers as futile and harsh. The vile diction used creates violent images in, Dulcet et Decorum est.. Arms and the Boy and Anthem for Doomed Youth are not as effective in conveying Wilfred Owens feelings on death and suffering because they are not as graphic. The impure reality is Chorine Simpson Making Close reference to language, imagery and verse form, consider the ways in which death is presented in Dulcet et Decorum Est. International Relations - Essay Example Similarly IGOs strive to enhance international relations and cooperation while NGOs try to deliver developmental aids to their beneficiaries. The ultimate goal of an NGO is to enhance sustainable development whereas an IGOââ¬â¢s mission is to promote human rights and to support socio-economic development. The fundamental point of distinction is that IGOs may include governments when NGOs may not2. 2. ââ¬ËThe Tragedy of the Commonsââ¬â¢ is an economic theory developed by Garrett Hardin. The theory states that individuals who act independently according to their self interests normally behave contrary to the long term interests of the whole group by depleting common resources whose demand is overwhelming the supply3. More simply, ââ¬ËThe Tragedy of the Commonsââ¬â¢ can be simply referred to an economic problem where every individual tries to best exploit a given resource. When the demand for this particular resource overwhelms the supply, individuals who consume an extra unit directly act against the interests of other people who have no longer access to the benefits. This economic problem occurs when individuals ignore the wellbeing of the whole society in an attempt to entertain their personal interests. This economic theory is often linked to sustainable development and global warming as they are related to the exploitation of resources by humans in pursuit of th eir personal gains. Oceans, atmosphere, national parks, and fish stocks are some of the examples of ââ¬Ëcommonsââ¬â¢. 3. According to some experts, human rights represent moral principles that define specific standards of human behavior despite cultural or national differences4. Human rights are considered as legal rights across the globe and particularly protected under national and international law. These rights belong to all people simply because they are humans. Ideological Relations between Mao Zedong and Nikita Khrushchev Essay
Ideological Relations between Mao Zedong and Nikita Khrushchev - Essay Example The second fight was against the nationalist Kuomintang (Marks 10). The Nationalist Kuomintang was led by Chiang Kai Shek. The overlapping wars persuaded Mao to ignore the advice and directions by Stalin. During the Second World War (1939-1945) Mao followed the lead of Stalin and agreed on the Joint Anti-Japanese Coalition with a leader of Nationalist Kuomintang, Chiang Kai Shek (Hershberg 149). The treaty of friendship was signed with Nationalist Kuomintang in 1945. After 3 months of Japanââ¬â¢s surrender, Stalin broke the treaty (Li 4). In 1950, Mao Signed Sino-Soviet Treaty of Friendship & Alliance (Li 409). The alliance resulted in $300Mio loan at a very minimal interest rate along with the military alliance for the period of 30 years. In 1954, after the death of Joseph Stalin, Nikita Khrushchev met Mao and formally handed over Port Arther base to China (Khoo 4). The Post Stalin policies by Khrushchev were in conflict with the mindset of Mao. The reason was that Khrushchev den ounced Stalin through his speeches. In 1956, Khrushchev developed the relationship with Yugoslavia. The leader of Yugoslavia Joseph Broz Tito was denounced by Stalin. Mao was the supporter of Stalinââ¬â¢s ideology. Khrushchev tried to dismantle Maoââ¬â¢s support of USSR. ... à The major reason for the Sino-Soviet split was the national difference. The political line of Mao was totally opposed to that of Khrushchev. Therefore, the conflict in political perspectives between the two parties leads to the creation of two rival formations internationally. The issue was not explicitly considered as the national difference. The issue was believed to be the different historical developments between Russia & China. Different level of productive forces was considered as the major difference between two rivals. In addition to this, the Russian revolution began from the cities and moved towards the countryside, whereas the Chinese revolutions began from the countryside and moved towards the cities (Westad 9). Moreover, the relations to imperialism between the countries were also having a different perspective. The Sini Soviet split was basically the ideological conflicts. Therefore, in 1960, the worsening of ideological relationships between Mao Zedong and Nikita K hrushchev lead to the Sini Soviet Split. 2. Critical Evaluation of the Sources Most of the data regarding the Sino Soviet Split was retrieved from a number of different sources. A brief critical evaluation of two of the sources is as follows Source 1: Sino Soviet Conflict: Cold War In the Communist World 1921-1959 The Sino Soviet Conflict was the book written by Lorenz Luthi, which was published in 2010. The book elaborated the Sino-Soviet Conflict with great details. Therefore, the book describes in detail history of Cold war and the reasons for Sino Soviet Conflict.

Trends in Business Communication Essay Example for Free
Trends in Business Communication Essay Over the past two decades technology has advanced rapidly, bringing substantial change in how people communicate in business. While traditional methods of communications such as formal letters and business meetings still take place, even these types of communications have changes dramatically. With the rise of personal computers and the internet in the early 1990ââ¬â¢s, nearly every form of communication in business today would be largely unrecognizable to businesspersons from previous decades. The development of these business communication methods are one of the biggest reasons for movement toward an increasingly global economy today. In todayââ¬â¢s business environment, typed letters are seldom used. In the times when they are used, they are used as more of a formality than as an everyday form of communication. From personal business experience, they are mainly used to personalize a relationship with clients and most often times are reinforced with electronic communications. Even the way letters are written in todayââ¬â¢s business environment is drastically different from years past. Electronic methods for producing and personalizing the letters have been greatly enhanced by the software available today. As for non-formal written communications such as memos, from personal experience they are almost never received in hardcopy. They are all disseminated via e-mail. E-mail is the communications forum that has most affected business communications. Whether formal or informal, it provides for immediate transmittal and reply. A common issue with e-mail communications is that they may become too burdensome, however. The ease of mass dissemination and the prevalence of its use can often lead to large volume of relatively unimportant e-mails. There have been methods developed to lessen this burden, however, including the ability to identify relatively important e-mails such as flagging them. While e-mail has provided a much more fluent and easier method of communication among co-workers and clients, there have been advances that allow businesspersons to accomplish many tasks with less communication with people than was necessary in the past. In todayââ¬â¢s business environment, almost all successful companies have interactive websites for customers to research information or to directly communicate with customer support. Data research is constantly required for customer inquiries or for data mining in almost every position within a company. The development of networked databases and cloud computing has allowed employees to conduct almost all necessary research without even speaking to a customer or another employee. The advancement of cloud computing in recent years allows businesses to store and access data remotely, rather than maintaining their own infrastructure. It allows you to access data using any device with a network connection as well as to work on documents with other businesspeople in multiple locations. Cloud computing also allows unlimited storage space and through subscription to the software, allowing businesses to only use what they need. Telecommunications has also been developed into something drastically different than from just a few years ago. While almost all conferences and meetings took place in person not too long ago. More frequent meetings that include all personnel are now increasingly possible with advances in teleconferencing and on-line meetings. In my current position, meetings are held several times a week from offices all around the country on-line. Training is also being conducted in this manner with live training sessions on-line where you can interact with the instructor through instant messaging and telephone. Because of these methods, business can be conducted from almost anywhere a networked computer is available. Another trend that is being allowed by business communication is that employees are increasingly working from remote locations. Devices such as wikis, PDAs, and much more powerful networks and transportable computers have made many of these advances in business communication much easier. In a previous position, our director often worked from remote locations while away on either vacation or business trips almost seamlessly. In my current position, I frequently interact with employees who work from home. The continually advancing technology of recent years has brought about dramatic changes in business communication. In the years to come, it will allow companies to become increasingly paperless will likely provide even greater changes to the way that businesses communicate. Rapidly advances in mobile devices and the software available for them will make what today is viewed as extraordinary the norm. In all, the developments of the last few years have greatly enhanced business communication, improving productivity and generally lowering costs while enabling a company to increase revenues. Effective communications play a critical role in all relationships within a business from management to employee to client. slide 1 of 10 The efficiency and overall profitability of businesses who have quickly adapted to the new communication methods has greatly improved, leaving all other companies no choice but to try and keep up. Communication is probably the most critical factor in the business world of today and companies who can more quickly to develop more effective communication will almost certainly have a substantial advantage on their competition.

Banquos Virtue in Shakespeares Macbeth :: Free Essay Writer
Banquo's Virtue in Macbeth à à à The Bard of Avon creates some truly mean and ugly characters in the persons of the Macbeths, but he creates a counterpart to them in the character of Banquo. This military man will be the subject of this essay. à In Everybody's Shakespeare: Reflections Chiefly on the Tragedies, Maynard Mack explains how the Bard upgraded the Holinshed version of Banquo: à His [King James] family, the Stuarts, claimed descent from Banquo, and it is perhaps on this account that Shakespeare departs from Holinshed, in whose narrative Banquo is Macbeth's accomplice in the assassination of Duncan, to insist on his "royalty of nature" and the "dauntless temper of his mind" (3.1.50). Many critics see a notable compliment to James in the dumb show of kings descending from Banquo ("What, will the line stretch out to th' crack of doom?" In pretending that he is about to seek advice from Banquo, Macbeth [. . .] is relying on the security of his office to prevent a contradiction from Banquo. So he is a man to be feared. (56-57) à Clark and Wright in their Introduction to The Complete Works of William Shakespeare comment that Banquo is a force of good in the play, set in opposition to Macbeth: à Banquo, the loyal soldier, praying for restraint against evil thoughts which enter his mind as they had entered Macbeth's, but which work no evil there, is set over against Macbeth, as virtue is set over against disloyalty.à (792) à In Fools of Time: Studies in Shakespearean Tragedy, Northrop Frye explains the rationale behind Banquo's ghost in this play: à Except for the episode of Hercules leaving Antony, where mysterious music is heard again, there is nothing really supernatural in Shakespeare's tragedies that is not connected with the murder of the order-figures. History of Architecture Essay
1. Comparing and contrasting Minoan and Mycenaean architecture, describe how the two architectures are different and why. Minoan architecture was characterized by a number of structures that acted as epicenters for religious, commercial, and administrative lifestyles. In the recent past, archeologists discovered tombs, palaces, towns, and roads in Crete which symbolized the Minoan landscape. All this evidences the pre-historic culture that survived in the Aegean Sea. Minoan palaces were used to hold gatherings, workshop for artists and food stores. The palaces were multi-storied buildings with impressive exterior and interior staircases. The tombs were built in round shape with a flat wood-framed roof. It was not until Neopalatial period, 1700-1400 BC that Minoan towns started to emerge and easier linkage between the towns and palaces, roads were developed via the interior of the island (Marquand, 2008). On the other hand, Mycenaean architecture came into being in the Mycenaean period and most of their architecture is indebted to architecture of Minoans of Crete. An outstanding characteristic feature of Mycenaean architecture comprises of megaron, usage of exceptionally large stone blocks, corbel vaulting, and large fortification walls. Besides, the Bronze Age Citiesââ¬â¢ plan and layout on the mainland resembled that of palaces of Crete to a large extent. Some of the major Mycenaean architectural projects were huge tombs, city planning, and palace. Palaces in the Minoan period had an open, vast courtyard whereas in Mycenaean megaron ââ¬âindoor hall. Mycenaean architecture is also said to have been characterized by professional engineering works -evidenced by size of stone blocks used in constructing walls. Later their work was referred to as Cyclopean architecture by the Greeks and another distint feature from from the Minoans was the technique used in corbel vaulting. Therefore, Mycenaeans can be said to have been more technical in the architectural works as compared to the Minoans (Marquand, 2008). 2. Discuss the evolution of the Greek temple form from its early days as a megaron to how it is represented in the Hellenistic period. How and why did it evolve in the way that it did? A number of earliest Greek Temples are up to date the orientalizing and geometric periods. The temple had a votive model which in most cases was found in tombs and the basic geometric style of an ornament. The persistent advancement of the Greek Temple was was characterized by an addition of more columns, increased size, and inclusion of general underlying base of three steps. Therefore, the columnar screens and base generated a symbolic and visual transition from the normal world to the space of the temple. The progression of the Greek Temple involved a number of stages: the first stage is the megaron ââ¬âindoor hall- which saw it being used as temple and it was initiated in the Mycenaean period; second stage was characterized by initiation of peristyle and an increased size; stage three was evidenced by completion of the peristyle, integration of the monumentality of Egyptian temple, symmetrical construction, and architectural design in conformity with requirements of Golden Se ction (Marquand, 2008). The Greek Temple has therefore totally remained to be a monument and it does not seem to combine its setting with the Mycenaean and Minoan designs. The temple is also a major achievement by human beings to have accomplished and the Temple represents an exceptional object from the natural environment. Consequently, the Temple has continued to serve as a commemoration of the geographical sacredness and provision of sanctification through a terrace that acted as the templeââ¬â¢s pedestal. It is also worth noting that the aforesaid column parts of the Temple does not match to natural forms such as plants or trees since the basic assumption was to evoke a human rationale and reasoning as opposed to monumentalism. The masterpiece of Greek architecture continued to evolve into classical designs (500-323 BC) and Hellenistic designs (323-27 BC) and it was evidenced by improved engineering skills applied in constructing towers (Ibid, 2008). 3. Describe the sensory experience of the Panathenaic Procession that would lead you to the Acropolis and up into the complex. It is quite evident that when one takes a closer look in the historical books of ancient Greek and during the Classical period that there was a direct relationship between religion, politics, and art or architecture. Historians have established that first temples were created to house cults and in particular to facilitate religious practices in the community. Parthenon as a temple was spectacularly placed in the ââ¬ËHoly Cityââ¬â¢ of Acropolis and hence acted as a means with which people could link the temple to their past. A notable feature is the Panathenaic Procession as it represented the religious and social lifestyles of the Athenians. Besides, the Procession was part and parcel of festivities that honored Athena, panathenaea which was commemorated annually. The procession comprised of ritual presentation of new cloaks or peplos to the ceremonial Athena statue (Neils, 1992). After every four years, a presentation of a huge peplos was made to the Grand Panathenaea within the Parthenon. Subsequently, every other successive year, Panathenaic Procession was marked by peplos presentation to Athena within the Erechtheum. As a formality, the Panathenaic Procession was started at Diployn Gate and traversed Agora with the final destination being in Acropolis. The activity of most importance to the women as during the period they performed a lot of activities such as weaving and presenting huge peplos to Athena every fourth year in Pathenon and smaller peplos to Athena in Erechtheum on yearly basis. Phases of Procession were represented by the frieze of the Parthenon that extended to a length of about 160 Metres. It stretched from the South West end of the Temple ââ¬âwith horse riders- to the North and West sides before heading to South, West sides (Neils, 1992).

Marketing plans of pamper baby diaper Essay
A successful marketing is the ability of a company to execute plans for conception, launch, pricing, promotion, and distribution of a product or service to satisfy both; the target customersââ¬â¢ needs as well as organizationââ¬â¢s goals. Thus, managing the market of a product requires significant decision making with regards to identifying the target market, assessing its positioning in the minds of consumers, designing suitable pricing policy, and ensuring availability of the product to all the customer segments. Our objectives are to rebuild the brand and gain greater market share. we suggest that the company should carry out more promotion rather than dropping the price. The ways used are by advertising through different mediums in order to create customersââ¬â¢ brand awareness and loyalty towards our products and to increase our sales volume. For the first year, Procter and Gamble will be focusing on competitive advertising where Pampers is able to point out their special features, uses and advantages relative to competing brands. In the long run, Procter and Gamble are also planning to reach agreements with hospitals where doctors and nurses are encouraged to use our products for new born babies. With this, we can indirectly attract parentsââ¬â¢ attention and this leads to quality convincing and brand loyalty throughout all the stages of babies growth, be it with doctorsââ¬â¢ advise or just sharing stories among other parents. The 4-Level of Prizes is another promotion strategy that we are strongly convinced on. Customers are physcologically driven to keep buying Pampersââ¬â¢ products in order to accumulate points and redeem prizes. In the view of product innovation, we Pampers are going to improve our products by offering a wider range of sizes, thicker in breath and eco friendly diapers. For example, due to th e increase in the customerââ¬â¢s awareness of the environment, Pampers will market green diapers where each product line is developed to the stage of a baby toddlerââ¬â¢s life accordingly. In budget sense, Pampers is contributing increasing profit to Procter & Gamble by reaching profit up to USD 5369 million in year 2008. This number later climbed up to USD 5471 million in 2009 and USD 5736 million in 2010. By this, we believe we can grow our business and greater shareholder and stakeholder value by bringing innovations to the marketplace that can upgrade the living standards of consumers at all economic levels. ACTION PROGRAMS Product (What will be done?) Innovation on thicker diapers with scent will be done. Since urine and motion create bad odours, Pampers researchers proposed that diapers come with scent and thicker in breadth to absorb heavy leakages without any odour for long hours. A bigger range of size choices will also be offered to solve the problem of limited sizes available in market to fit all babies in every stages. Also, we are offering eco friendly diapers whereby these green diapers can be cleaned easily and recycable. Price (What will be done?) Pampers must set reasonable prices based on its proposed production cost on material used. Also, Pampers have to conduct reference pricing, which is ever-aware of what prices their competitors are offering in the market. If the prices set is higher than consumerââ¬â¢s expectation, consumers will be more likely to turn to the competitorsââ¬â¢ products. Place (what will be done?) Products should be placed at visible stores to create customers based awareness. Among the places that are suitable to distribute Pampers samples are places like parents workshop, nurseries, supermarket, etc. Promotion (what will be done?) Pampers can roll commercial ads using different types of mediums such as TVs and radios. Also, marketers can make utilize on blogging network. Website posting by some bloggers who are also new parents can be role models for their followers can be useful too. buy custom Case Report on National Australia Bank (NAB) essay
buy custom Case Report on National Australia Bank (NAB) essay Introduction Analyzing case study Australian Banks in Asia, it is necessary to say that Australian business begins to integrate into Chinese market. National Australia Bank (NAB) is one of the most active players in the Chinese market. However, the main challenge of NAB is management issue that is connected with cultural differences between Australian and Chinese markets. Cultural differences between markets concern many banks at the present time; therefore, it is important to regard this management issue. Management issue is a problem that prevents the company from the development and growth in the market. Management issues can be connected with strategic renewal, structure, governance, communication, culture, and leadership, especially when it concerns international market. Cultural differences between markets should be studied due to globalization of business and its integration into international market. This report will reveal peculiarities of NAB operating in the Chinese markets and recommend the ways of solving the management issues concerning cultural differences. The report aims to prove that the cultural difference is the main barrier that prevents NAB from successful integration into Chinese market. The main purpose of this report is to identify management issue and evaluate development and strategies of NAB in the Chinese banking market. Issue Identification For NAB, the Chinese market appears to be challenging since there are numerous regulatory limitations as well as cultural differences in many areas. The Chinese market has tough conditions for all kinds of business and thus, even such successful Australian bank as NAB requires additional investment to employ Chinese human resources and attract Chinese customers. Understanding cultural differences is a must for global business. Indeed, NAB runs business in other nations such as China, Britain, or the USA as it is a wonderful opportunity to get large profits and win the respective market (Staniuline, 2009). From the case study, it is evident that cultural implications have an impact on reception and longevity of a new brand regardless of bank's services, experience, and size. Anothe management issue is that NAB cannot operate in Chinese market of other domestic banks and impose its values. It means that NAB should save its cultural identity and be respectful to Chinese traditions of business. International business practices require knowledge of cultural differences to avoid misunderstanding and conflicts. Besides, it is important for NAB to be tolerant of Chinese management styles to gain new opportunities and agreement (Raspin, 2007). Critical Discussion The case study shows that cultural differences can be both driving and restraining force while operating in the global business community such as China. However, it has been argued that the management issues of NAB are connected with differences between Australian and Chinese values. Hofstede's theory of organizational culture is applicable in this particular case and it helps to show the differences between Australian and Chinese markets. The argument centered on whether Hofstede's theory of organizational culture may solve the problem of cultural differences between Chinese and Australian markets (Alvesson, 2002). Power distance concerns social inequality including the issues of race and gender. In countries with high power distance, subordinates have high dependency to superiors and don't disagree with superiors directly (Khastar, 2011, 321). In Australia, power distance is not so evident and thus, social inequalities and discrimination are not typical for NAB. The huge Chinese market is attractive, but its culture is a major issue for NAB. China has high power distance. Uncertainty avoidance is another factor that defines organizational culture. It develops good corporate strategy and strategic leadership (Brooks, 1997). Uncertainty avoidance index (UAI) is high in both China and Australia. In cultures with high UAI, people try to be structured, and behave what they are expected and want to know that will happen in the future (Khastar, 2011, 321). This cultural aspect proves that NAB has all opportunities of being successful in Chinese market. Another cultural difference between Chinese and Australian banking markets concerns individualism and collectivism. IIndividualism versus collectivism is regarded with the degree of people feeling belonged to a group and the identity of relations between group and people (Khastar, 2011, 321). Chinese culture is collective, while Australian culture is individual. It is a crucial gap between them. Masculinity versus femininity is another cultural barrier for Australian bank in Chinese market. In Australian society, both women and men share the same set of values and have equal rights. On the other hand, China is a masculine society, where men have more rights than women, and the latter are treated with injustice. NAB can provide equal rights for men and women, and this will help to improve customers responsiveness. The strength of NAB is that it is not afraid of cultural differences with China and it does not look for easy ways such as European and American banking markets. Hofstede's theory of organizational culture is not always ideal and relevant. It does not presuppose the variety of human societies. It is necessary to take into consideration that within a Chinese society, there can be other cultural groups that also have their peculiarities. The limitation of Hofstede's theory of organizational culture is that it does not consider different cross-cultural behavioral patterns. It is evident that this theory does not help to solve the main management issue of NAB. In China, NAB has the problems employing local managers in order to double the amount of branches (Rasmussen and Wangel, 2006). On the contrary, it is evident that Hofstede's theory of organizational culture is still relevant because cultural issues remain unsolved. Moreover, globalization of domestic organization is a must for its transfer on the international level, and Hofstede's theory shows the obstacles that it should remove in order to operate in the international environment (Raspin, 2003). Moreover, it has been determined that in modern international market, banks are ready to implement cultural management to avoid disagreement and conflicts with their customers. It is argued that Hofstede's theory of organizational culture is still applicable in current business world because globalization and internationalization are the two driving forces that destroy boundaries between cultures (Schermerhorn, 2013). Quantitative Research Methods Project Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words
Quantitative Methods Project - Research Paper Example eople are influenced by peers and similar or highly-regarded others in their environment wishing to conform to their expectations and attempting to fit in to their surrounding social milieu. Taking the theory of social influences to its logical conclusion, social influences also argues that we are indoctrinated through enculturation to perceive aspects in certain manner (Nisbett & Ross, 1980). Heuristics or schemas are created through which we automatically categorize facets of our environment such as objects, personality traits, self, social roles, and social groups in a subjective manner, consequently driving our response. This is known as a cognitive model of perception. Priming, on the other hand, (although not necessarily contradictory, merely different; the two could actually be synthesized) argues that different stimuli instigate memory/ mental node thus evoking a behavioral or judgmental repose. The theory has been characterized as a network of interconnected nodes that when a particular target (for instance word or human) is perceived, the node or group of nodes representing that concept are activated, and flooding spreads to closely associated nodes (Maxfield, 1997). The perceiverââ¬â¢s response is quickly and involuntarily activated and little if anything can be done to impede response. The general framework is cognitive, namely the belief that enculturation has seeded particular heuristics that instigate negative stereotyping. In fact, however, affect has been shown to have as strong if not stronger effect on attitude (Esses, Haddock, & Zanna, 1993). Can these results carry over to prejudice? Which is stronger in determining negative stereotyping: priming or social influence? This is what this study intends to investigate. Deliverable 2: Write a critical analysis of the structure of one of the two theories you selected above, decomposing the theory into its component parts; focus on the strengths and weaknesses of the theory in terms of its promise

Case perspectives in the juvenile justice system Essay
Case perspectives in the juvenile justice system - Essay Example prit, and deciding severity of the crime, as well as recommending suitable correctional methods in order to transform the delinquent and prevent recurrence. Comprehensive intervention programs, with the help of affordable, accessible, and appropriate to all concerned, should be used to fostering cooperation among families, schools, and communities to interact with child offenders who are prone to commit serious and violent crimes. After schools programs under the supervision of caring adults will inculcate resilience in children and transform them into successful adolescents. Children in the USA are arrested, under the provisions of ââ¬Å"Juvenile Justice System,â⬠on suspicion of violating criminal laws for frequent truancy, running away from home, violating curfew, possession of alcohol, possession of marijuana, and shoplifting. ââ¬Å"Compared with juveniles who start offending in adolescence, child delinquents (age 12 and younger) are two to three times more likely to become tomorrowââ¬â¢s serious and violent offenders.â⬠(US Department of Justice, 2003). It is observed that school-age children and teens that are unsupervised during the hours after school are far more likely to use drugs, engage in criminal and other high risk behavior, receive poor grades, and drop out of school than those children who have the opportunity to benefit from constructive activities supervised by responsible adults. The absence of father or a peer or equivalent in the home magnifies the negative impact of mother-child relationship upon adolescent problem b ehavior. Data compiled by the National Centre for Juvenile Justice and Office for Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention shows that ââ¬Å"the peak hours for violent juvenile crime are between 3.00 PM to 8.00PM because millions of young children after school are left without responsible adult supervision or constructive activities.â⬠At this juncture we should not forget the words of President Clinton that ââ¬Å"we must make sure that
